Police Setting up DUI Checkpoint on Berlin Turnpike This Friday

Cops are cracking down on drunk drivers along the Route 15 turnpike.

Local police will be conducting a checkpoint on the Berlin Turnpike this weekend, cracking down on people who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Newington Police Department will be conducting a D.U.I checkpoint on Friday, Aug. 16. Funding for these initiatives was made possible by a grant awarded from the Connecticut Department of Transportation, Newington police said in a news release.

"Each year thousands of lives are lost, many more are injured as a result of alcohol related accidents," police said. "The Newington Police Department hopes that its efforts will provide safer traveling and greater awareness of the results of driving under the influence and help reduce the loss of lives and injuries by removing intoxicated drivers from the roads."
