Scalise-Mayer Golf Tournament Less Than A Month Away

The organizing committee is taking registrations for golfers and sponsors for the 24th Annual Berlin VFW Scalise-Mayer Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament is one of the largest charity tournaments in the state as between 160 and 210 golfers converge on Timberlin Golf Course and later for the Championship Dinner at The Aqua Turf Club in Southington on August 8, 2012.

Bill Scalise was Chief of Police in Berlin and also the first commander of the Berlin VFW. Scalise, father of six, died suddenly of a heart attack in 1988 while clearing the site that would become the current home of the VFW headquarters on Massirio Drive.

Bill Mayer was an avid community servant, with a long history of volunteerism in the Berlin Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America, The Berlin VFW, Little League of Berlin and both the band and athletic boosters at Berlin High School. Mayer, also a father of six children, suffered from kidney disease and passed away in 2000.

The tournament donates to several different organizations. Monies from the tourney go to the Berlin VFW, local scholarships and The Hospital of Central Connecticut Dialysis Dept.

The Scalise Scholarship this year went to Adam Becker. The Mayer Scholarships went to Colin King and Alex Carbonell.

“It is a great day and helps us remember the legacy of giving that Chief Scalise and Bill Mayer made in this town,” tournament organizers said. “We have given more than $50,000 to the Hospital in the last 10 years and awarded scholarships to great kids. Several of the Scalise scholarship winners have gone on to become state police officers or town police officers.”
