Officer Barry Hertzler earned Department Service Award

During the summer months of 2010, the Ragged Mountain Preserve open space and recreation area was the target of weekly smash and grab car breaks of visitors. The larcenies committed all had the same manner of entry and it was suspected that the same suspects were involved. Increased patrols and surveillances were conducted and new information was developed to identify a suspect vehicle.
Officer Hertzler was assigned to work the investigation and got a break in the case after the perpetrators used credit cards and identification, from one of the victims, to commit credit card fraud and to cash stolen checks. Officer Hertzler identified a suspect and conducted an interview that ultimately stopped the larcenies from that day forward.
