Tax Breaks Approved For Major Berlin Manufacturer

The three-year abatement is for the firm's recent 5,000-square-foot expansion.

BERLIN, CT — A major manufacturer in Berlin received a tax break from the Berlin Town Council last week regarding a recent expansion of its facility.

The council voted 6-0 on June 3 in favor of a tax abatement for Budney Overhaul and Aerospace in Berlin, which is located at 127 New Park Drive.

According to Berlin Economic Development Director Chris Edge, the tax break is for a 5,000-square-foot expansion at its facility.

He said the tax break would be on the increase of the assessed value due to the expansion and not simply the whole property itself.

Edge said the Berlin Economic Development Commission has endorsed the tax break.

Such deals are allowed under the town's tax abatement policy, which aims to help out businesses arriving in Berlin and/or expanding in town.

"It fits our criteria and helps a local company," Edge said.

The agreement calls for a 50 percent abatement in year one, a 40 percent abatement in year two, and a 30 percent break in the third year.

After that, the site, including the expansion, will be taxed as normal.

Council members had minimal comment about the tax breaks and easily approved the motion.

"So they build a building and we give them a break as we've done for many businesses," Berlin Mayor Mark Kaczynski said.

Budney, according to its website, "is a woman-owned business and manufactures complex machined components and sub-assemblies for the aerospace and land turbine engine industries. "
