World War II Veteran, 99, Granted HS Diploma In Berlin

The war hero, who turns 100 in October, was unable to get his diploma because he left high school to fight in World War II.

BERLIN, CT — One is never too old to complete one's education, especially if your goal is sidetracked by, literally, saving the world from fascism.

Thankfully for Berlin resident John Sampl, 99, that was the case last month when the World War II veteran was officially given his high school diploma courtesy of the Berlin Board of Education.

During a special ceremony and presentation at the June meeting, the school board awarded the diploma to Sample because he had to withdraw from high school his senior year to serve in the U.S. armed forces.

"Tonight, we'd like to honor him with an honorary diploma from Berlin High School, which he never had a chance to achieve because he went to serve his country," said Berlin Superindent of Schools Brian J. Benigni.

"John, on behalf of Berlin Public Schools as superindentent, I'd like to thank you for what you did for our country."

A visibly moved Sampl was on hand for the meeting and accepted his diploma with smiles and pride as the audience and school officials game him a lengthy standing ovation inside the BHS auditorium.
