Branford Animal Shelter Seeking Help For Dog In Need Of Surgery

BRANFORD, CT - A dog that was thought to have cancer does not but she is still very ill and in need of costly surgery.

The Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter says this on social media:

“So we have some good news and some bad news......Cali does not have cancer. But she has a disease that mimics cancer and unfortunately it too will kill her if she does not have surgery.
The tumors that were seen were actually nodules from this disease.

“It is called Hyperparathyroidism. This disease raises your calcium level dangerously high and causes muscle wasting and organ failure. The vets have located the 1 parathyroid that is malfunctioning- there are 4 total but from all of the ultrasounds they believe only 1 is not functioning.

“After the malfunctioning parathyroid is removed, the other parathyroids will begin to function properly . The vets will need to monitor her for 5 days after the surgery. The surgery to correct this will cost $5,000 ( Pieper Memorial Vet in Middletown is giving us a significant discount - the original quote was $7200.00).

“The vets have stated that Cali should live a long, happy life after this surgery. Our goal is to have the surgery done in the first week of July. Please help us raise the funds so we can save her life!
