In Car Stolen From Branford, Teens Crash In New Haven Fleeing Cops: PD

NEW HAVEN, CT — Tuesday morning, New Haven officers from the Criminal intelligence Unit and Shooting Task Force saw a black Volkswagen Atlas "driving recklessly in the Hill neighborhood," and when they ran the tags discovered the car was stolen from Branford, police posted to "X."

It was around 11:30 a.m., and police began to track the car as it traveled to Fair Haven and then deploy stop sticks, which were in effective in deflating the Volkswagen's front driver side tire, police wrote. But even after having deflated tires, the car "accelerated" toward Grand Avenue where police said it caused a collision at Front Street. The people in the car the VW crashed into suffered minor injuries, police said.

A number of "males were seen running from the Volkswagen," police said, adding that two 16-year-olds were caught and placed under arrest.

Police said that a handgun was found "near where one of the juveniles was caught" and a second gun was found inside the VW.

The two teens were charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, interfering with police and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, police said. They were taken to the juvenile detention facility in Bridgeport.
