Canton FD Urges Folks To 'Adopt' A Fire Hydrant And Keep It Clear This Winter

Firefighters are asking residents to help them help the community by taking care of fire hydrants nearby.

CANTON, CT — Local fire officials are asking residents to help them help you by making sure fire hydrants are accessible when the snow piles up.

As winter weather continues, the Town of Canton Fire & EMS is asking residents to help them keep the community safe by adopting a fire hydrant near their home.

"If there is a fire hydrant on or near your property, please help keep it accessible after snow and ice events," wrote fire officials to the community recently.

As part of that call to arms, firefighters say residents should:

• Remove all snow and ice from the hydrant

• Maintain a 3-foot clear-away zone around the hydrant, so firefighters have room to work

• Clear a path from the hydrant to the street for quick access

"Seconds matter during emergencies. Clear hydrants help us respond faster and protect lives and property throughout Canton," wrote the Canton Fire & EMS Department.

"Thank you for doing your part and supporting your local firefighters and EMS personnel this winter."
