Cheshire Food Drive Extended; Donations Still Accepted

This year's goal of collecting more than 35,000 items for the annual Cheshire Food Drive fell short, volunteers said this week.

Volunteer Tom Scannell said just over 21,000 items were donated last weekend during the collection drive on the Cheshire Green.

Scannell said however, that half the industrial businesses in Cheshire were closed last week because they did not have electricity. That prevented employees from bringing in their donations, he said.

To make up the shortfall, Scannel said additional food pickups will be conducted this week at participating commercial companies and at Cheshire Schools.

Despite not meeting is goal over the weekend, Scannel said a large number of residents still participated. "Those who could not make their donations at their offices or schools went out of their way to drop their checks and food items off to us at the town green," he said.
