Cheshire Library Project Stacks Up

Self-checkout will streamline services for library patrons.

One-by-one, the books at the are getting individual bar codes which will allow patrons to check out their own books.

The "Radio Frequency Identification" tags have been installed in about 25 percent of the library's books according to Library Director Ramona Burkey. The work began in November.

Once complete, the tags will allow users to check out books at three RFID stations on the main floor. As part of the project, the check-out desk will be reconfigured and nearby book shelves will be rearranged, Burkey has said.

Residents who would like to help with the RFID projects are welcome to volunteer to place the tags in books. "You do not need to be a 'techie' to do tagging," Burkey wrote in a recent newsletter.

Patrons who would like to volunteer an hour or more each week for the tagging project, should call the library at 272-2245. Burkey said she plans to compete the tagging project before the busy summer months.
