District 4 Town Council Candidate’s Emotional Intelligence is it there?
Miessau's ability to make good choices in question as he seeks a seat of the Town Council
In life we all have to make choices, sometimes they are good and sometimes they are bad. When a candidate runs for public office we learn that our past can be brought up and that it is the price one pays when they become a public figure. Basically, you sign the nomination card and now you have to take the good with the bad. This is the hard lesson that District 4 Town Council Candidate John J. Miessau is learning that the past can come back to bite you especially when you portray yourself as a transparent, honest, and a good guy. Not so sure about that.
We’re learning a lot more about this candidate’s behavior in front of ZBA boards in 2017. Suing the Town of East Haven in 2018 for tax assessments. Negative and harassing interactions with his neighbors in 2021 and his physical actions in 2024 that led the Inland Wetlands Commission to place a cease and desist on. So, is John J. Miessau the good guy that over 130 people have made reference to on his Facebook page in an attempt for damage control? Despite his pleas he can’t deny Minutes of ZBA meetings, East Haven Police Reports, State of Connecticut Superior Court records, photos and maps that Mr. Miessau has a past that doesn’t shine the best light.
Lets examine the East Haven Police reports and the illustration of the provided map for the reader. At the end of Sibley Lane is the Lighthouse Marina who John J. Miessau is a partner and owner. When you exit the marina road (Sibley Lane) you have a choice to make a left onto Old Town Highway heading to South Street or you can make a right down Old Town Highway to Morgan Avenue. Since Miessau lives over on Hampton Road he can go in either direction but in this case there is the right direction and then the wrong direction.
In the middle of Old Town Highway lived the person who was making numerous complaints about John J. Miessau’s and his partners about the Lighthouse Marina. Those complaints were from the condition of the property, to the use of the property and Miessau was not pleased that those complaints were made. In several statements to the East Haven Police Miessau made reference to those complaints that were made against him (5/17/2021 @ 17:22); (5/21/2021 @ 07:43); (7/16/2021 @ 16:36). It would seem that driving in this direction would raise the probability of potential confrontation with the resident old Town Highway because Miessau would be driving right by his house. Does Miessau have the right to do that? Absolutely! However, is it the right choice?
As you can see in the illustrated map Miessau drove a .10 of a mile more to get home than if he made the left turn and avoided the area all together. So now this begs the question does John J. Miessau look for trouble? In the Monday 5/17/2021 report @ 09:45 it’s stated by the complainant that Mr. Miessau was harassing him because he not only drove by his house once mumbling words to the complainant but twice and that Miessau gave him the middle finger in front of his 9-year-old son. Later that day on 5/17/2021 Miessau also reported the incident at 17:22. (8 hours later) Seems rather odd but we’ll address that one later.
Then on 5/21/2021 at 07:43 Miessau once again is driving by the Old Town Highway resident who is outside watering his yard and again heading towards Morgan Avenue as seen in the photograph. Again, did Miessau make the right choice after the 5/17/2021 incident? What do you the reader think? How about the East Haven voters of District 4? What will they think of this candidate for office?
Serving on the East Haven Town Council is an honor because you were chosen by your district to be the best of 6 people running in the district to serve your neighbors. Does Mr. Miessau have the emotional intelligence to serve in this capacity? One would certainly be concerned by his lack of self-control and judgement. There will be times on the Town Council we will need good stewards of our most precious resources along with finances. We will depend on those representatives to have all of our interests in mind, not someone who only serves himself and feels determined that securing governmental power will be able to secure his own personal desires along with the power of influence. We’ve already had the FBI in Town once with a spotlight on East Haven from other self-serving politicians! This type of behavior draws a spotlight and East Haven has had enough!

The next question is the extent of the desire of Miessau to attempt to secure a restraining order as noted in the 5/21/2021 East Haven Police Report. Really? Let’s get this straight. Miessau knew that there was a prior incident at the Old Town Highway address. He now is driving by the same Old Town Highway address again 5 days later and the subject of the restraining order is on his own property and he’s threat to Miessau? Maybe if this happening on Hampton Road it could be believable but for the 2nd time Miessau was at this Old Town Highway home in an harassing manner as indicated in the report. Leaders and Political party nominees should have emotional intelligence, not impulsive revengeful ways to resolve disputes. Just a thought.
Then in the last incident on 7/16/2021 at 16:36 the East Haven Police were called to their own lobby where Miessau once again contacted them regarding this Old Town Highway resident. This time he accused the Old Town Highway resident of trying to run him off the road on South End Road. Miessau also mentions that he tried to get a restraining order but failed. It was clear that the State of Connecticut Superior Court judge wasn’t buying his stories and dismissed the case. It’s unfortunate that the transcripts of that Protection Order could not be acquired in time for this article. If Mr. Miessau is successful in his bid and secures a Town Council seat we might be able to produce it for the readers at a later date. The public has a right to know this information!

In the closing argument to this unique exposure of a single candidate it’s important to layout to the reader that this may seem as a personal attack on candidate John J. Miessau and he has every right to feel that way but what this is FACTS and TRUTH. Nothing is misleading, slanderous nor false. Every article is based on facts. What is most important is who is the candidate and what is his background? This reporter feels that this is not conjecture. Mr. Miessau clearly showed lack of restraint, emotional intelligence and the “get even” mentality that will not serve the East Haven Town Council, The Town of East Haven nor the 29,000 residents of East Haven well. Furthermore, Mr. Miessau’s behavior and lack of transparency in this campaign is very concerning especially when he’s calling others out and he’s doing the exact same as with 109 Old Town Highway.
On November 4, 2025 remember these articles and remember the map the RIGHT CHOICE and the WRONG CHOICE. Not once has John J. Miessau had the courage or conviction to be transparent about these articles instead he’s hid from the truth and even attempted to find out who the authors and collaborators are who are telling their stories in anonymity because of the fear of retribution. We say it’s not who we are it’s who you are Mr. Miessau and what you’ve done to other neighbors and fellow East Haven residents whom you have issue with. We’ve seen all the so called “supporters” they should only know! It’s time you are held to account to the same standards you have done to others and there many out there. We haven’t forgotten nor should you and deep down you know. Lastly stop blaming others for your poor and unneighborly behavior own it. Great guy yeah right!
On November 4th the people of District 4 make your right choice!
