FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield officials are warning residents to prepare for flooding overnight Sunday and into Monday morning.

“Persistent strong easterly winds will cause coastal flooding tomorrow,” First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick said Sunday in a message to residents. “This flooding could be similar to that seen in October 2018.”

Up to 3 feet of flooding above ground level is expected near the waterfront and shoreline, according to the message, which said waves as high as 7 feet will result in erosion and splashover onto streets and properties, with minor damage possible.

High tide is anticipated 10:05 p.m. Sunday and 10:19 a.m. Monday, the message said. Fairfield is under a wind advisory from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday and a coastal flood warning from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Beach area residents are urged to move vehicles to high ground, and may park at the downtown train station, the message said, adding anyone parking at the station should lock their vehicle and remove valuables.

The message also reminded residents to secure outdoor objects and not to drive around barricades or through water of unkown depth. With wind gusts up to 55 mph possible, the area may see isolated power outages.

“A degree of uncertainty remains in the storm track and wind intensity,” Kupchick said. “All residents should monitor the weather forecast as storm impacts may change.”
