Fairfield, CT — Senator Tony Hwang, candidate for Fairfield First Selectperson, received strong multi-party support today from three respected leaders in government reform and independent politics: former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd-Whitman, Tri-Chair of the Forward Party; Chip Beckett, Chairman of the Connecticut Independent Party and former Glastonbury Town Council Chair; and Danielle Chesebrough, former First Selectwoman of Stonington and Chair of the Connecticut Forward Party.

The three leaders came to Fairfield to underscore what they believe the town needs right now: steady, respectful, solution-focused leadership that puts people ahead of partisan politics - and to highlight Hwang’s proven ability to bridge divides and deliver results.

Gov. Whitman praised Hwang’s collaborative approach to public service. “Tony Hwang has built a long and admirable career by listening, working across the aisle, and leading with decency,” Whitman said. “At a time when many communities are frustrated by division and dysfunction, Tony stands out as someone who puts people and good governance first. Fairfield would benefit from his kind of steady, experienced leadership.”

Beckett, who worked with Hwang during the 2016 Kasich for President campaign, emphasized Hwang’s commitment to facts, fiscal discipline, and practical governance. “Tony is someone who shows up, does the work, and focuses on facts, not politics,” Beckett said. “We worked together on the Kasich Presidential campaign because we believe in balanced budgets and real solutions. Tony’s experience at both the local and state levels give him a deep understanding of how government works and how to deliver for the people he serves.”

Chesebrough, who led Stonington for six years and now chairs the Connecticut Forward Party, stressed the importance of experience and community-centered leadership. “Having served six years as First Selectperson in Stonington, I know how much steady, community-focused leadership matters,” Chesebrough said. “Tony embodies those qualities in every interaction. CT Forward is proud to support him because he listens, shows up, and leads with the kind of integrity that truly strengthens a town.”

Tony Hwang: A Record of Results and a Vision for Fairfield

Hwang expressed gratitude for the endorsements. “Gov. Whitman, Chairman Beckett, and First Selectperson Chesebrough have each dedicated their careers to responsible, accountable, community-focused government,” Hwang said. “Their support reinforces what this campaign stands for: uniting Fairfield, tackling challenges together, and prioritizing residents over politics.”

For more than 20 years, Hwang has built a record of service and results for Fairfield, including:

  • Supporting investments in education and expanded children’s mental health services
  • Public Safety & First Responders Support by securing more funding for the Firefighter Cancer Relief Fund. Increased penalties on street takeovers & excessive reckless driving
  • Advancing school safety initiatives and student-centered improvements
  • Leading bipartisan reforms to strengthen transparency and accountability in the CT Siting Council process
  • Securing state funding that returns tax dollars to Fairfield for flood mitigation, infrastructure upgrades, and community nonprofits
  • Passing the Vision Zero and implementing road safety law. Strengthened e-bike and e-scooter regulations to reduce accidents and ensure roadway safety compliance
  • Establishing Connecticut’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Task Force and expanding insurance coverage for rare disease genetic biomarker testing

Hwang said his campaign for First Selectperson is focused on delivering the steady leadership Fairfield needs: protecting taxpayers through disciplined spending, maintaining high-quality town services, strengthening schools, and safeguarding neighborhoods from overdevelopment. “Fairfield deserves leadership that listens, communicates clearly, and works constructively with everyone - Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike,” Hwang said. “People care about results, not rhetoric. My focus has always been people over politics, and that is exactly the leadership I will bring as First Selectperson.”
