
FAIRFIELD, CT — K9 Ruger, a Fairfield police canine officer, has died, the department announced Wednesday.
"It is with a heavy heart that the Fairfield Police Department announces the passing of our beloved K9 Ruger after suffering from an acute medical condition," officials wrote on Facebook.
Ruger was partnered with Officer Kevin Wells, and the two served the town as a team from 2011 to 2015.

The German Shepherd retired from active duty following a back injury suffered while jumping out of a police cruiser.
He was trained in obedience and tracking, and was certified in Schutzhund Level I.

"Over the years, Ruger participated in countless searches, drug interdiction operations, and community events that have all contributed to the safety and well-being of the Town of Fairfield," officials said. "For that, we will be forever grateful for his service."
