Dog Rescued After Falling Into Frozen Lake Mohegan In Fairfield: PD

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A dog was rescued Sunday after it fell into frozen Lake Mohegan in Fairfield, according to police.

The incident occurred at about 3 p.m., said Fairfield Police Sgt. Jenna Wellington in an email to Patch.

"While police, fire and animal control arrived quickly, it was fortunate that the dog was already out of the water by the time of their arrival," Wellington said. "Our involvement was providing a blanket to warm and dry the dog."

Wellington said that people at the lake told police that a bystander assisted in getting the dog to shore, "but this was not witnessed by any police personnel, so we cannot confirm that aspect of the incident."

Wellington warned residents to be careful around frozen bodies of water, due to their inherent danger.

"Ice can be unpredictable and may not be strong enough to support the weight of people or pets," Wellington said. "While Lake Mohegan is a park where dogs are permitted to be off leash, we encourage everyone to exercise caution around frozen lakes and ponds and to keep pets on a leash to prevent similar incidents."

In the event of seeing anyone in distress on the ice, call 911 immediately," Wellington added.
