Fairfield Forms Building Committee For Construction Of New Dwight Elementary School

The current Timothy Dwight Elementary School was built in 1962, and has a capacity of 378 students.

FAIRFIELD, CT — As the town prepares to build a new Timothy Dwight Elementary School, officials are seeking five to nine residents to volunteer to serve on a newly formed Dwight School Building Committee.

According to the Committee's Charge, it "shall be guided by the educational specifications developed by the Board of Education (BOE), as revised and approved, and made part of this charge, along with any reference documentation cited therein."

In a recent community update, Acting First Selectwoman Christine Vitale encouraged residents "with backgrounds in engineering, finance, architecture, and/or construction management" to apply. The committee will have at least one parent from the Dwight community.

"This project also aims to address district-wide challenges such as overcrowding and the increasing enrollment at the Early Childhood Center (ECC) while planning for future growth within the district," according to Vitale, who is a former Chair of the Fairfield Board of Education. "The school's building is considered to be in fair condition; however, all building systems were designed according to 1960s standards. To bring the facility up to 2025 design codes, updates are required to meet modern fire, ADA, and health regulations.

"The new building will provide adequate space to support the district's curriculum, ensuring that Timothy Dwight Elementary can continue to serve Fairfield into the future."
