Storm Causes Downed Trees, Outages, Main Break: Fairfield Police

There were also several minor accidents before snow turned to rain overnight, according to Fairfield police.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A night of snow, rain and wind left Fairfielders with downed trees, outages and a water main break to deal with Monday.

The area saw about an inch of snow and wind as strong as 53 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

“Overnight there were several minor accidents shortly after the snow began to fall,” Fairfield police said in an email. “Once the storm changed over to rain, high winds caused numerous alarms and some power outages.”

Police also received reports Monday morning of trees on wires or in the roadway, according to authorities, who added there was water on the 1900 block of Fairfield Beach Road, but that the flooding was not serious enough to close the street.

A main break Monday morning on Sturges Highway in Westport was impacting about six Aquarion customers on Sturges Highway and Sturges Road, and was also causing low water pressure and discoloration in Greenfield Hill, according to the utility provider. The issue was expected to be fixed Monday afternoon. Also in Greenfield Hill, roughly 60 Optimum customers had no service as of just after 4 p.m.

About 70 UI customers in Fairfield — less than 1 percent — were without power mid-day Monday, according to the company’s outage map.

Wind gusts up to 29 mph and a 20 percent chance of snow were forecast for Monday evening, the National Weather Service reported.
