According to the Farmington Valley Health District, which serves several towns, including Farmington, WNV often doesn't exhibit any symptoms.
But in some cases, it can cause severe and, sometimes, deadly consequences, according to health officials.
Common symptoms are fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rashes, the FVHD said.
The health department issues several tips for folks to follow to avoid getting bit, including: minimizing time outdoors at dusk/dawn; using bug repellent; wearing shoes, socks, and long pants; and using mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors.
