This project will restore the riverbank, remove the existing pier, and build a new boardwalk and viewing platform to improve accessibility for all.

Tuesday, the Farmington Land Trust released more information about the project.

Presently, a short trail runs from the Rails to Trails, about 300 feet from the cul-de-sac at
River Road in Unionville leads to a previously accessible fishing pier, which must
be removed due to wear and tear, according to the trust.

Phase 1 of the project will begin on Tuesday, Sept 16, as the trust will remove the pier and build a natural stone buffer at the bend in the river. This area will be available for fishing at the end of September.

Phase 2 of the project will include the construction of a wheelchair accessible boardwalk and viewing platform.

“The wild and scenic Farmington River is one of our community’s natural treasures,” said
Kristin Flyntz, executive director of the Farmington Land Trust. “The River Access for All
project will ensure that everyone in Farmington can access this gem for passive recreation for generations to come.”

Scheduled for completion by Fall 2026, the project will be funded through grants and the
generosity of the community.
