GLASTONBURY, CT — Shortly after the polls closed Tuesday night, vice President Kamala Harris was announced as the winner of Connecticut's seven electoral college votes, defeating former President Donald J. Trump and three other candidates, according to the Associated Press.

Also, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-CT, won re-election and a third term in Congress, according to projections. He defeated GOP challenger Matthew M. Corey and two other candidates.

Votes are still being counted in other key races, including the U.S. House of Representatives, and the state House and Senate races.

At the top of the ballot, residents were be asked to vote on a referendum question that reads:

  • "Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to permit the General Assembly to allow each voter to vote by absentee ballot?"

Here are key races:

U.S. House

Voting Districts 1, 2, 4, 5; House 2nd

  • Democratic: Joe Courtney
  • Republican: Mike France

Courtney jumped out to an early lead. With the first 11 towns reporting, Courtney had amassed 9,555 votes to France's 8,226.

Just after midnight, Courtney was declaring a win.

Voting Districts 7. 9; House 1st

  • Democratic: John B. Larson
  • Republican: Jim Griffin
  • Green Party: Mary L. Sanders

Despite just 40 percent of the precincts reporting, Fox61 declared longtime Democratic incumbent John Larson the victor over Republican challenger Jim Griffin and Green Party candidate Mary Sanders in the battle for the District 1 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

  • Republican: No candidate

  • Democrat: MD Rahman
  • Republican: Stephen King
