GLASTONBURY, CT — Beloved, iconic and even popular are three words to describe a tree on Oak Street in Glastonbury.

But on Thursday, townsfolk were lamenting its demise as crews had to remove the tree on Oak Street after it had some bad luck.

"Last night, a large and locally revered tree on Oak Street regrettably split apart, and the town is working with its tree vendor to remove the tree from the area," municipal officials said Thursday morning.

Equipment, including a large crane, then showed up to facilitate the cleanup effort and intermittent and partial road closures were part of the efforts on Oak Street and near New London Turnpike and Stop & Shop.

"Over the past few decades, the Town and community have dedicated great efforts toward preserving this extraordinary tree, and we are saddened to learn of its natural demise," town officials said.
