GLASTONBURY, CT — Glastonbury police Sgt. Kreg O'Brien, a 33-year veteran of the department, has announced his retirement.

O'Brien, who was hired in May 1989, has served in the department's youth, detective and traffic divisions. As a Glastonbury native and the brother of a retired Glastonbury cop, officers said his institutional knowledge of the town and its police department has been "invaluable" to day-to-day operations and in training new officers.

In 1994, O'Brien went inside a residence engulfed in flames to rescue a person inside of it — an act that earned him a medal of valor, the Glastonbury Police Life Saving Award and the Glastonbury Meritorious Service Award.
