License Plate Readers In Glastonbury? Voice Your Opinion Tonight

The town is considering installing license plate readers in 13 intersections, and residents can share their thoughts at a hearing tonight.

GLASTONBURY, CT — Tonight, the town of Glastonbury will host a public hearing on whether to install license plate readers at 13 intersections around town.

"LPRs play a role in improving public safety and help police conduct investigations and solve crimes," the town wrote in a memo announcing the hearing.

Officials didn't specify which intersections they're considering for the scanners.

The meeting will be held via Zoom from 7 to 9:30 p.m., and a Zoom link can be found here.

Proponents of automatic license plate scanners say they can help police search for missing and wanted people and vehicles, the Hartford Courant reported, while opponents like David McGuire of the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut argue they raise privacy concerns by increasing surveillance.
