In Memoriam: Josephine 'Joan' Ann Benedict Johnson

The Glastonbury resident passed away Oct. 29 at the age of 80.

Josephine ‘Joan’ Ann (Grippo) Benedict Johnson, 80, of Glastonbury, beloved wife of Thomas W. Johnson and the late Anthony Benedict Sr., passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2015.

Born in Westfield, MA on February 14, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Theodosio J. and Rose (Mangini) Grippo.

Josephine moved to Hartford at an early age. She spent several years with her sister Mary in Texas City, TX, graduating from Texas City High School in 1953. She returned to the Hartford area in the late 1950s and married Anthony Benedict Sr., who passed away in 1984. Josephine worked many jobs until she became a clerk at Hartford Superior Court. Later, she worked in the financial department of the Office of the Chief Public Defender for over 30 years until her retirement in 2008.

A loving mother and grandmother, Josephine will be dearly missed by her three children, Anthony Benedict Jr. and his wife Kelly of Colchester, Deborah Chasse of Colchester and Dorothy Sousa of Marlborough and her four adored grandchildren, Vincent and Melissa Chasse and Joshua and Matthew Sousa. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Dominik and Frank Grippo, and one sister, Mary Cox.

Funeral services will begin on Tuesday (November 3) at 10 a.m. at the D’Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter St., East Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Dunstan Church, 1345 Manchester Rd., Glastonbury. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Family and friends may call on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Donations in Josephine’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
