Glastonbury town staff members are thanking United States Post Office letter carriers and other donors for a successful food drive.

Town staff wish to express their sincerest thanks and appreciation to the United States Post Office letter carriers and the many generous residents who donated non-perishables to last weekend’s ‘Stamp Out Hunger!’ Food Drive. On the second Saturday of every May, the USPS invites citizens to leave non-perishables in a bag at their mailbox for the local food pantry. This year, the letter carriers expanded their support by delivering all donations directly to the food pantry! (In past years, donations were held at the local post offices and subsequently transported to the pantry by Town staff and volunteers.)

After weeks of advertising, Town staff and volunteers gathered at the Riverfront Community Center on May 10th to greet the USPS drivers, unload the community donations, and stock the pantry shelves. Thanks to the generosity of Glastonbury residents, this event successfully filled the food pantry shelves with cereal, vegetables, coffee, snacks, and more. (See photos below.) Social Services Outreach Supervisor, Evelyn Lopez, organized this event with the USPS and was overwhelmed by the program’s success. “We are so pleased with the success of this year’s campaign. The food pantry relies on community donations and we are grateful for the generosity of our residents and their ongoing commitment to sustain this essential service. A special thank you to the USPS letter carriers for organizing this annual event and for taking on the added task of delivering the items directly to our pantry site. We look forward to continuing this partnership each spring!”
Glastonbury’s Self-Select Food Pantry is located inside the Riverfront Community Center and allows eligible residents to “shop” for both perishable non-perishable food items and other household essentials. Despite the success of this event, the stocked shelves will only last a month or two and therefore donations are always welcome and encouraged. Please visit our website at www.glastonburyct.gov/foodpantry to view a list of most needed items as well as opportunities to make a monetary donation. If you would like to help but don’t have time to shop, you can donate essential items online through the Food Pantry’s Amazon wish list!
