Beloved Educator, Coach In Groton Dies Unexpectedly

The community is mourning the loss of a middle school teacher and coach who passed away suddenly.

GROTON, CT — A popular teacher and coach died suddenly Sept. 25. Chad Fleming, 54, a Mystic resident, taught at Groton Middle School, according to his obituary.

Previously, he taught at Lebanon Middle School, Fitch Middle School, West Side Middle School, and in Florida.

Fleming's "passion for sports was lifelong and infectious," according to his obituary. He coached high school volleyball during the 2024-25 season, according to The Falcon Press, the Fitch High School newspaper.

He also coached varsity boys' basketball at Lyman Memorial High School in Lebanon.

"His players and fellow coaches will remember him for his integrity, passion, and unwavering support," his obituary reads.

Fleming is survived by his wife and two children.

Groton Public Schools Superintendent Susan Austin said that Fleming was a "pillar" of the town and "a dedicated middle school educator... who saw the potential in every student," according to Hearst Connecticut Media.

The Groton Middle School PTO posted about the loss on Facebook: "Our thoughts are for the family of the recently lost 8th grade teacher at GMS."

"This is so heartbreaking," one parent commented. "My son and his classmates really loved him."
