Home Hit by Truck, Deemed Uninhabitable, Groton Police Say

A 26-year-old man was cited after his pickup truck crashed into a Groton home, which was later deemed uninhabitable.

GROTON, CT — A Groton residence was struck by a pickup truck on Tuesday morning leading to the home being deemed uninhabitable, police said.

At 8:10 a.m. the Groton Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle had crashed into a building near Fort Hill Road and Newtown Road.

Responding officers located a 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, equipped with a snow plow and sander, partially inside a residence on Utica Court, police said. The home abuts Fort Hill Road.

The driver received medical evaluation for minor injuries and did not require hospital transport. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the collision.

According to the initial investigation, the pickup truck was traveling south on Newtown Road (Route 117). It then crossed through the intersection at Fort Hill Road, continued over the sidewalk on the south side of Fort Hill Road, and subsequently struck the residence on Utica Court, police said in a news release.

Due to the damage from the crash, the Town of Groton Building Inspector determined the residence was uninhabitable. The Groton Police Department’s Community Outreach Specialist, alongside the American Red Cross, is assisting the displaced family.

Emergency responders from the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton Ambulance, Yale New Haven Health / Lawrence and Memorial Paramedics, and the Groton City Police Department also responded to the scene to assist Groton Police.

Traffic on Fort Hill Road and Newtown Road was temporarily interrupted during emergency operations but has since returned to normal. The truck's operator was cited for failure to obey traffic control signal and failure to drive in proper lane.
