GROTON, CT — City of Groton police released a statement regarding a lockdown at local schools Monday.

Police said they responded to a report of a man walking toward the school "possibly in possession of a firearm."

However, police quickly found the man and discovered that the item in his hand was not a gun.

"The situation was unfounded, and there was no threat to public safety," police wrote on Facebook.

Police said nearby schools were placed on lockdown "out of an abundance of caution."

"We understand how concerning these situations can be and appreciate the cooperation of school staff, students, and the community," police wrote. "The safety of our residents, especially our children, remains our top priority."
