Student Injured In Groton School Bus Crash: Police

A bus carrying 34 students was involved in an accident Thursday morning in Groton, according to police.

GROTON, CT — A student was injured and an investigation is underway following a crash involving a school bus and a car, according to Town of Groton police.

Police were dispatched to Route 1 (New London Road) at the intersection with Flanders Road on a report of an accident involving a school bus at 9 a.m. Thursday.

A Student Transportation of America School Bus with a driver and thirty-four students was traveling eastbound Route 1. A Volvo sedan was stopped on Route 1 at an intersection waiting to make a left turn onto Flanders Road.

The school bus struck the Volvo from behind before leaving the road, striking a utility pole and a large boulder, causing damage to the bus, according to police.

The school bus was transporting the children to Mystic River Magnet School, an elementary school located on Fishtown Road in the Mystic section of Groton.

First responders arrived at the scene of the crash to help police and those involved in the crash.

An administrator from the Mystic River Magnet School and several school nurses, also arrived to assist students and contact parents.

One student from the bus was transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The Volvo driver was not taken to the hospital.

The school bus was towed from the scene. Another school bus and several parents arrived to take the students to school.

The school bus driver was cited for failing to drive a reasonable distance apart from another vehicle, police said.

Route 1 at Flanders Road was closed for two hours while the accident was under investigation.
