Billboard and Protest Pressure Stop & Shop Over Cage-Free Commitment

Shoppers and advocates demand Stop & Shop and parent company Ahold Delhaize to stop supporting the cruel caging of hens once and for all.

Last week, Hartford neighbors protested outside the Stop & Shop on New Park Avenue over the company’s failure to follow through on a promise it made nearly a decade ago: to end the use of cruel cage systems for egg-laying hens and sell 100% cage-free eggs by 2025.

Stop & Shop, whose parent company is Ahold Delhaize, continues to stock its shelves with eggs from hens packed into cages so small they cannot spread their wings, walk freely, or properly nest.

The Humane League also placed a billboard just 0.2 miles from the store to remind everyone that Stop & Shop supports extreme animal cruelty.

Local shoppers don’t want their money funding inhumane practices, and they expect companies to follow through on the commitments they make to the public.

It’s time for Stop & Shop and Ahold Delhaize executives to be transparent with customers about their progress and to end cages once and for all.
