Hartford Announces Labor Day Holiday Impacts

The unofficial last weekend of the summer is this weekend, with municipalities recently unveiling what will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2.

HARTFORD, CT — The unofficial final weekend of summer has the Hartford Yard Goats playing two more games at home on Saturday and Sunday.

But, like most municipal officials statewide, the Yard Goats are off on Monday, Labor Day.

City of Hartford offices, schools, and public libraries are closed on Monday, with regular operations reopening on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The holiday was born out of the nation's labor movement and has, since, evolved into the notion of summer's last hurrah for all.

It is always the first Monday in September and, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it is "an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers."

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," reads the U.S. Department of Labor website.
