Hartford's New Mayor Is Democrat Arulampalam: Reports

The new mayor, who was easily elected Tuesday, continues a long tradition of Democrats serving in Hartford.

Hartford's mayoral race was won by the Democrat, Arunan Arulampalam, which shouldn't surprise anyone in city political circles. Hartford hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1971.

It is no surprise in a city that is heavily Democratic and hasn't had a GOP mayor since the early 1970s.

The biggest race of the night featured Arulampalam taking on Republican Michael McGarry and four petitioning hopefuls, Gisele Gigi Jacobs, Nick Lebron, J. Stan McCauley and Mark Stewart Greenstein.

Arulampalam's election as a Democrat comes the same year the city's last Republican mayor, Antonina "Ann" P. Uccello died at 100 this past March.

He will fill the post vacated by Democratic incumbent Luke Bronin, who is not seeking another term. Bronin had endorsed Arulampalam.
