CROMWELL, CT — A Cromwell woman recently received an official government email instructing her to leave the country, despite being a U.S. citizen, according to a report from NBC CT.

Lisa Anderson, a physician, was born in Pennsylvania, and she got the email from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the outlet reported.

Anderson told the outlet she has sought legal advice and now carries her passport around with her as a precaution. She advises anyone else who gets a similar email to also seek legal counsel.

Anderson’s situation isn’t unique, as immigration attorneys in Boston recently reported getting the same email, according to NBC CT.

Connecticut records show Anderson’s physician license was first issued in 2006.

State Sen. Matt Lesser, whose district includes Cromwell, posted on his Facebook page about Anderson’s situation.

“Dr. Lisa Anderson, one of my constituents and a doctor in Cromwell, has received an email from federal authorities ordering her to leave the country immediately, according to recent news reports,” Lesser wrote.

“She's an American citizen who was born in Pennsylvania. Shocking and outrageous behavior, a stunning violation of the Constitution,” Lesser said.

Cromwell Mayor James Demetriades wrote on his Facebook page that the email to Anderson is a “clear administrative error,” one which must be “immediately remedied.”

“I often try to avoid the specter of national politics on this page, but we can all agree that this Cromwell doctor has been incorrectly targeted and the federal government must issue an immediate recission of their letter,” he wrote.
