Second in command at the town clerk's office for 16 years, Linda Bettencourt was nominated Monday by the mayor. The common council will vote on her appointment Aug. 5.

Sixteen-year deputy town clerk Linda Bettencourt learned Monday the mayor had chosen her to lead the office as successor to recently retired Sandra Russo-Driska.
"I'm absolutely thrilled. It's wonderful. I was hoping he would appoint me and I would hope that there is no opposition," Bettencourt said.

Bettencourt, who has worked for the city for 20 years, 16 of them as deputy town clerk, says her transition should be very smooth.
Mayor Dan Drew emailed Bettencourt Monday and then came down to congratulate her. "It's encouraging that if you work hard to advance yourself, your hard work will be paid off. It's a very important message to city employees," she said.
