Subject Of Undercover Middletown Meth Buy Enters Plea In Fed Court
A Hartford man implicated in an undercover meth purchase in Middletown is facing at least five years in prison, authorities said.
MIDDLETOWN, CT — A defendant in a drug trafficking case that stemmed from an undercover purchase in Middletown has entered a plea, a federal prosecutor said.
Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States attorney for the District of Connecticut, said that 41-year-old Hartford resident Godfrey Smith, also known by the street names of "Mike" and "Mikey," entered a guilty plea Thursday in Bridgeport federal court to a methamphetamine trafficking charge.
According to court documents and statements made in court, in April, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's Hartford Task Force and Middletown Police Department made a controlled purchase of about 53 grams of crystal methamphetamine from an individual in Middletown. During the transaction, investigators identified Smith as the "source" of the drugs, according to case records.

On Aug. 22, investigators made a controlled purchase of approximately 240 grams of crystal meth from Smith in Hartford.
Smith was arrested on a federal criminal complaint on Sept. 4. At the time of his arrest, law enforcement agents seized from Smith approximately 27 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 44 grams of cocaine, 32 grams of crack cocaine, $3,200 in cash, and a box of .45 caliber ammunition.

Smith pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, 5 grams or more of methamphetamine, an offense that carries a mandatory minimum prison term of five years and a maximum term of 40 years. Avery said.
He is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny in Hartford on February 28.
Smith is released on a $100,000 bond pending sentencing.
The DEA's Hartford Task Force includes personnel from the DEA Hartford Resident Office, the Connecticut State Police, and the Bristol, Hartford, East Hartford, Enfield, Manchester, Middletown, New Britain, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield, and Windsor Locks Police Departments.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted with the investigation.
