MILFORD, CT — I-95 southbound is closed at exit 36 due to a fuel spill, according to the Milford Fire Department.

The department posted on Facebook around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday that the highway exit "will remain closed for an extended period of time."

A box truck that had just filled up with diesel at the truck stop in Milford struck debris in the road, fire officials said.

The debris ruptured the fuel tank, leaking fluid on the road.

Firefighters arrived after the driver called 911 and "acted quickly enough to prevent any diesel from reaching the storm drain and affecting waterways."

Speedy dry was used to dam the flowing liquid while crews worked to patch the leak.

Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection crews arrived on scene and worked with the fire department to reduce any additional damage.

The exit off-ramp was closed as of 11:54 a.m., according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
