The world's largest Native American museum is planning Kids Week events April 12-14.

The Pequot Museum has announced a full line up of events for Kids Week inclusive of native crafts, culture-filled fun and educational programs for children of all ages to enjoy.

From April 12 through April 14, The Pequot Museum will have crafts and special highlights in the museum Gathering Space, as well as special workshops each day, including:
OUTDOOR ACTIVITY

- Meet the MPTN Fire Department – April 12 – 14: Families can explore the Mashantucket Fire Department Truck and meet the First Responders of Mashantucket.
GATHERING SPACE ACTIVITIES
- Arts & Crafts – April 12 – 14: From 10am – 3pm, kids are invited to join us in the Gathering Space for native crafts and coloring fun with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum team.
- ‘What is it’ Workshop – April 12 – 14: From 10am – 3pm, kids can stop by the Archaeology table in the Gathering Space where they can sort through various artifacts to figure out which each are, and what they’re used for.
- Sailors’ Skills and Ropemaking – April 12 – 14: From 11am – 2pm, participants will practice their rope skills and learn how to tie a variety of common knots used on land and a sea, such as a square knot, bowline and clove hitch.
- Hubub Native Games – April 12 – 14: From 10am – 3pm, kids can win it all by playing hubbub at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, a favored traditional game of Pequot people and sister nations.
- Storytime – April 12 – 14: At 11am, join us in the Auditorium lobby for a story telling experience where traditional stories written by Native authors of children’s books will be read.
- Mystic Aquarium Traveling Touch Tank – April 13: From 11am – 2pm, families can enjoy fun in the Gathering Space with hands-on investigations of live invertebrates such as lobsters, horseshoe crabs and shellfish from the Mystic Aquarium. Young children must be accompanied by a parent of guardian.
- Wonder of Water – April 14: From 11am – 2pm, students will learn the history of the Mystic River estuary and its changes over time. Participants will also learn about the types of life the river supports, while analyzing water samples from the Mystic River for salinity, turbidity, pH, pollutants and micro plastics.
WORKSHOPS
- Wampum Bracelet Workshop – April 12: From 1pm – 3pm, kids can participate in this hands-on learning experience where they will create their own unique bracelet as a keepsake. Priced at $8.00 located in the Auditorium lobby, each session is one hour and holds 20 people.
- Corn Husk Creation Workshop – April 13: From 1pm – 3pm, kids can participate in this hands-on learning workshop with a traditional craft that is designed to teach traditional native values and the art of the use of corn husk, a natural resource from Mother Earth. This workshop is priced at $8.00, with one-hour long sessions for 20 people at max.
- Wondr Smart Lab – Learn to Code Workshop – April 13: From 1pm – 3pm, kids will learn how to code a robot in just one session using an iPad. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum will introduce kids to the Sphero Bolt and teach them how to control a Sphero robot’s movements, colors speed and more. These workshops will be led by a special guest from the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). This is a complimentary workshop, and space is limited to 15 people for every one-hour session. Participants can register at the Visitors Services desk the day of.
- Clay Pottery Class – April 14: From 1pm – 3pm, kids can join us for a fun time while making and shaping small traditional-style Northeastern pinch pots, or creating their own unique pots. This workshop is priced at $8.00, with one-hour long sessions for 20 people at max.
The Mashantucket Pequot Museum is open year-round from Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00am – 5:00pm, with the last admission option at 4:00pm. The Museum’s Gift Shop is also open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00am – 5:00pm; admission is not required to visit the store. Kids Week T-shirts will be available for purchase in the Gift Shop.
The Museum is open to the public, groups, and museum members. Admission rates for members and children (5 and under) are free, Adults $25, Seniors (65+) and College Students (with ID) $20, and Youth (6 to 17) $16.
