MONTVILLE, CT — The Montville Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday night for athletic teams to no longer be referred to as "the Indians," according to The New London Day. They will now be referred to as "Montville."

The high school logos will have no Native American symbols and will be simply a T or an M. The school needed to make a decision after a budget law passed last summer could mean that $1.4 million in funding would be withheld from the district for its use of a Native-American-related name as early as June 2023, The New London Day reported.

The news comes as other schools around the state grapple with similar issues. Glastonbury, Guilford, and West Hartford are just some of the towns that have dropped Native-American-related names.
