CT Diner Earns National Praise β€” But Its Days May Be Numbered

A Connecticut diner has landed on a national list, but the beloved eatery could be on its way out.

NEWINGTON, CT β€” Who among us can resist the delights of a diner? Welcoming carafes of coffee, fat menus, greasy bacon and eggs, stacks of pancakes, a weird number of mirrors β€” the joys of this quintessential American eatery abound.

With that in mind, Love Food has named the most charming roadside diner in every state. And in Connecticut, the restaurant that's got it going on in the charm department is the Olympia Diner in Newington.

Here's what Love Food had to say about the list's Connecticut representative: "Located a few miles south of Hartford, this roadside diner started life in Massachusetts before moving to its Connecticut home in 1954. Said to be the longest stainless-steel diner in the US, Olympia Diner has table jukeboxes and a homey, retro vibe that customers adore. The food is solid, no-frills cooking, with all-day breakfast dishes sharing the menu with specialties such as chicken Parmigiana and baked meatloaf with gravy."

However, a developer is under contract to purchase the diner at 3413 Berlin Turnpike and plans to construct a "new quick serve restaurant with a drive-through" window. Plans were submitted to the town for the project last year.

For now at least, the restaurant is still operational and is open daily. The over 70-year-old diner is described as "an American road classic" with "quality food in a clean, comfortable atmosphere," according to its website.

The restaurant was crafted by the Jerry O'Mahoney Diner Company of New Jersey. The company built 2,000 diners from 1917 to 1941. These were primarily metal buildings, prefabricated in a factory and trucked to the location.

The Olympia Diner has a 4.2-star rating on 1,789 Google reviews.

Other diners in New England making the list include Miss Worcester in Massachusetts; Haven Brothers Diner in Providence; The Blue Benn in Bennington, Vermont; the Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine; and the Red Arrow Diner in Manchester, New Hampshire.
