'Served With Distinction': Longtime New London Police Officer Dies

A veteran police officer who rose to the rank of sergeant died recently, according to the police department.

NEW LONDON, CT — Retired police sergeant Russell "Rusty" Cavanaugh, 65, of New London, died recently.

"Cavanaugh served the New London community with distinction and honor for many years, leaving a lasting impact on our department and the citizens he served," police wrote in a Facebook post.

"Rusty was known for his genuine care for the well-being of others. His contributions to the New London Police Department will be remembered and cherished."

Cavanaugh died May 31 at home. He retired from the police department in 2005, according to his obituary.
