Gather your income documents (as needed): If you or anyone in your household currently receives benefits such as SNAP or cash assistance, you automatically meet the income requirements and do not need to provide income documents. However, if you or any member of your household does not receive these benefits, you will need to submit proof of income. Specifically…
If you or anyone in your household is employed, you must provide income for all household members from either the previous thirty days or four consecutive weeks anytime in the last three months prior to the date of application, which is then annualized. Households have the option of documenting income for the previous fifty-two weeks prior to the date of application if that more accurately reflects their annual gross income.
If you or anyone in your household is self-employed (e.g., freelancer, side-gigger, contractor, small business owner), you must provide a copy of a completed Self-Employment worksheet and your most recently-filed IRS Form 1040, including all schedules.
If you or anyone in your household get a pension, you must provide the most recent pension statement(s) OR most recent bank statement with IRS Form 1099. Signed statement from income source on letterhead also will be accepted.
If you or anyone in your household receives additional income, you must provide award letter(s) and/or signed statements, such as benefit verification letters for Social Security, unemployment or veterans’ benefits, contributions from friends/relatives, pensions or annuities, rental income or alimony, child support or adoption benefits.
*Please note: Energy assistance determinations take 45 business days. For further explanation, to see if you qualify or to schedule your phone appointment, call Community Services at (203) 239-2566 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
