Norwalk BOE Appoints 4 New School Administrators, HR Director

The Board of Education recently approved the appointment of two principals, two assistant principals and a new human resources director.

NORWALK, CT — The Board of Education recently approved the appointment of two principals, two assistant principals and a new human resources director for Norwalk Public Schools.

According to a news release provided by the school district, all five appointments were made during a special board meeting held Tuesday.

District officials said Beth Furnari is the new principal of P-TECH Norwalk after serving as the interim principal since March 2024.

The new principal of the South Norwalk Elementary School is Randall Austin, who most recently served as the assistant principal of Kendall College and Career Academy.

Moving into the assistant principal position at Kendall is Kayshawnia Torres, who most recently served as the assistant principal at Cranbury Elementary School.

Maryann Murillo will continue as the assistant principal of Nathan Hale Middle School after serving in the position in the interim since March 2024.

Additionally, the new human resources director for the district is Denise Altro-Dixon. She comes to Norwalk from Bridgeport, where she served as the executive director of human resources for the public schools from 2020 to 2023, according to the district.

The district also provided the following additional information about each new appointment:

Denise Altro-Dixon, Human Resources Director

Altro-Dixon joins Norwalk Public Schools with extensive background experience in human resources, labor relations, and family law. As the executive director of human resources for Bridgeport Public Schools, she directed a six-member team responsible for the functions of 38 schools that employed over 3,000 certified and non-certified employees.

Beth Furnari, Principal of P-TECH Norwalk

Furnari joined Norwalk Public Schools in 2022 as the assistant principal of P-TECH Norwalk. Prior to her arrival in Norwalk, Furnari worked her way up through Bridgeport Public Schools from an English teacher to a curriculum specialist then later as an assistant principal and principal.

Randall D. Austin, Principal of South Norwalk Elementary School

Austin comes to the South Norwalk campus after serving as assistant principal of Kendall College and Career Academy since 2022. He started his teaching career at Kendall in 2013, first serving as a kindergarten paraprofessional and later teaching kindergarten and fifth grade. Prior to his move to administration, he worked at Kendall as an enhanced curriculum teacher.

Kayshawnia Torres, Assistant Principal of Kendall College and Career Academy

Torres previously served as the assistant principal of Cranbury Elementary School, but was named acting principal of the school for the latter half of the 2023-24 school year. She previously worked in Danville Virginia where she served as a principal and assistant principal for the primary grades.

Maryann Murillo, Assistant Principal of Nathan Hale Middle School

Murillo finished the 2023-24 school year as the interim assistant principal of Nathan Hale Middle School. She's worked in the district for nearly 10 years, most recently working as an instructional math coach at P-TECH Norwalk.
