One Seriously Injured In Route 2 Crash: Fire Department

NORWICH, CT — One person suffered serious injuries in a fiery crash on Route 2 Tuesday afternoon, according to fire and police officials.

Yantic Fire Engine Co. #1 said on Facebook firefighters were dispatched at 4:26 p.m. to Route 2 eastbound for a two-car motor vehicle accident.

Two men had gotten out of their vehicle, a Toyota, to change a flat tire when a passing Nissan Altima struck the parked car and one of the pedestrians, according to state police.

Both pedestrians were injured. A 28-year-old Rhode Island resident, suffered serious injuries, while another 28-year-old Rhode Island resident, had minor injuries, according to police.

Both were transported to Backus Hospital, officials said, while one person subsequently was transferred to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, police said.

The crash happened in the vicinity of Exit 27 in Norwich.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and the Toyota was fully-involved with fire when firefighters arrived. The fire department extinguished the blaze and contained hazardous materials.

Police identified the operator of the Nissan as a 24-year-old West Hartford resident.

The accident remains under investigation, state police said Wednesday afternoon.
