Obituary: Alfred J. Zawadski, Sr.

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother. Proudly served with the US Army during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Alfred J. Zawadski, Sr., age 101, of Oxford entered into rest on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Griffin Hospital.

He was the devoted husband of the late Irene (Hornak) Zawadski.

Alfred was born in Bayonne, New Jersey on February 23, 1923 son of the late Ignatious and Helen Zawadski. He was a Huntington resident for 27 years before moving to Oxford in 1985. Alfred proudly served with the US Army during WWII. While serving he was awarded many metals including the Purple Heart. He was a crane operator for Carpenter Steel in Bridgeport for 38 years until his retirement in 1985.

Alfred was the beloved father of Richard Zawadski and his wife Kathleen Zawadski, James Zawadski and Alfred “Joe” Zawadski, Jr., grandfather of Aaron Zawadski and his wife Lindsay Zawadski and great grandfather of Alexandra and Adalyn Zawadski and brother of Paul Zawadski and his wife Peggy Zawadski and Peter Zawadski and his wife Patricia Zawadski Coleson. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson Michael Zawadski, two brothers, Felix and Chester Zawadski, a sister Eleanor Zawadski and a step-sister Mary DeDedonato.

On Friday, friends may greet the family from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Rd., Shelton. His funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM at the parlor. His burial with military honors will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VA CT Healthcare System, 950 Campbell Ave., West Haven, CT 06516.
