SOUTHBURY, CT — Nonprofit groups are keystone community organizations in the Southbury area. Fortunately, there is no shortage of organizations to volunteer or get behind financially, and that need your help.

Here are five outstanding nonprofit groups you should know about in the Southbury area:

1. Emma's Plan raises charitable donations through localized fundraising events to provide opportunities to be exposed to and support children, animals, and the arts. The nonprofit accepts donations, and also sells its merchandise in an online shop.

2. The Southbury Volunteer Fire Department is organized and staffed by residents of Southbury. Founded in 1932, the volunteers operate out of four facilities, with 16 specialty fire vehicles, and cover a rural territory that includes several miles of Interstate 84, single-family homes, industrial, heavy commercial, institutional, and some multifamily dwellings.

3. The Connecticut Choral Society has been dedicated to the performance of choral music of the highest artistic quality since its inception in 1980. Serving the communities of Southbury, Woodbury, and Newtown, the neighboring towns of western Connecticut, and beyond, they seek to stimulate greater appreciation and enjoyment of choral music, both for the singer and their audiences.

4. The mission of the Southbury Food Bank is nothing less than the elimination of hunger in the community. It accomplishes this through offering food assistance with respect and dignity to those in need.

5. Whiskers Pet Rescue is a no-kill cat rescue organization whose volunteers are committed to helping and caring for cats and kittens who have been abandoned, injured, abused, or neglected. The group rescues and adopts out hundreds of cats and kittens each year, placing them in loving forever homes.
