Southington Police Charge Woman with ID Theft, Criminal Impersonation

The suspect is accused of using a customer's ID to buy iPhones.

Thanks to a sharp-eyed employee of Simply Wireless, Southington Police arrested a woman on identity theft and criminal impersonation charges.

It was about 2:48 p.m. on Jan. 7 when officers were called to the Simply Wireless (Verizon) at 750 Queen St. for a report of identity theft.

Police said in a statement, that a store employee reported a customer had entered the store and allegedly attempted to purchase two iPhone 6S Plus phones using a fraudulent identification card bearing the name of existing customer. “The employee became suspicious of the transaction and confirmed with the existing customer that the transaction was not authorized and called the police,” according to a police statement.

The iPhones were valued at $1829.20, police said.

Maribel Hidalgo, 19, of the Bronx, NY. was arrested and taken to police headquarters where she was charged with third-degree identity theft, credit card theft, criminal impersonation, criminal attempt to commit fourth-degree larceny.

Hidalgo was held on a $50,000 bond until her appearance in court Jan. 8. In court, her bond was reduced to $500 and she was released from custody, according to the Connecticut Judicial Branch website. Her next court date is Feb. 16.
