Cheney Tech Class of '13 Challenged to Live Without Regrets

The commencement ceremony of Cheney Technical High School's Class of 2013 was picture-perfect, with clear, blue skies and a gorgeous sunset.

By Jessie King

The stars aligned for the Lucky ’13: baby blue skies, cool early summer air — no wind, no humidity and they were, after all, together one last time on their home field.

So these Cheney Tech High School seniors felt welcome; an unforgettable night to say goodbye to their high school careers and hello to their new lives.

Principal Robert Sartoris spoke first and said students not only earned a diploma from Cheney Tech but they gained “skills in a trade that will open doors to employability.” Sartoris reminded the new graduates that “life is always competitive” and he urged students to do their best and “no matter what you do, you can achieve your loftiest dreams.”

Class Salutatorian Brandon Gothberg was greeted with hoots and hollers as he approached the stage. Clearly a favorite, Gothberg took the stage bashfully. He delivered a speech reminding his classmates about their past and urging them toward their future. He was encouraging. Gothberg advised his classmates not to fear failure and offered Albert Einstein, Michael Jordan and J.K. Rowling as examples of people who found success after overcoming failure.

He said “if you follow your heart and work hard your dreams will become a reality.”

Class Valedictorian David Santiago was greeted with an equal amount of cheers as he approached the stage as if it were his own. He smiled like he was friends with everyone in the audience and confessed his hopes for his classmates.

“I hope, when you change, you don’t change the good things about yourself and you do it for yourself and not someone else,” he said.

Santiago said he sees “limitless potential” in his classmates, and he challenged all of the Class of 2013 to live their life with no regrets.
