South Windsor Police Hires New Officer

Sarah Hill, 23, is the newest addition to the South Windsor Police Department.

Hill, who graduated from Ithaca College and attended the Quinnipiac University School of Law for a year, is the department’s 40th officer.

She will start her training at the academy on July 3.

“We’re very excited,” Chief of Police Matthew Reed said. “It’s always good to have new hires.”

Reed said that Hill is on a leave of absence from law school, but that she is still in good standing with the school.

Hill ranked first in the most recent testing process, Reed said, and she did well on her oral board and on her background checks.

“We think she will be a good addition to the force,” Reed said. “We’re happy to have her here.”

Hill interned with the juvenile prosecutor’s office in Hartford, Reed said, and they highly recommended her for her intellect, organizational skills and work ethic.

Reed hopes to hire two more officers for the October academy class to bring the department to full strength at 42.

In the meantime, Hill will take part in the 17- to 21-week academy beginning next week, where she will get physical training as well as “hours and hours” of classroom work, Reed.

After she graduates from the academy, then she will begin her 16-week field training in South Windsor, Reed said.

“It’s a long, arduous process,” Reed said. “But for those who come through it, they have an opportunity for a great career.”
