Week Ahead In South Windsor: Town Manager Says He'll Apply for STEAP Grant for Fields

Item is on Monday night council meeting agenda.

After some criticism from former Town Council members, Town Manager Matthew Galligan said in his report to the council that he would move forward immediately with an application for a STEAP grant to fund the athletic fields project.

The Town Council in November approved the fields project at Nevers Park and authorized Galligan to apply for a $500,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant to help fund it. The remainder of the cost would be fundraised.

Galligan did not apply for the grant, however, telling the council that the grant request for the fields would likely be unsuccessful due to policy changes in the Malloy administration.

Instead, the council was considering whether to apply for the STEAP grant in order to help fund the emergency operations center at the old post office.

Before the last two council meetings, former councilors Kevin McCann and Cindy Beaulieu questioned why the grant hadn’t been applied for. Councilors Keith Yagaloff and Jan Snyder indicated they were not comfortable pursuing the grant for the post office project since the council had earmarked it for the fields.

A resolution authorizing Galligan to apply for the STEAP grant for the EOC/business center remains on the Monday night meeting agenda.

The Town Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Town Hall to discuss several items. See the full agenda here.
