Here are the top five stories in The Haddams-Killingworth today:

  1. Want to be prepared to help in an emergency situation involving injuries? Then why not take The Killingworth Ambulance Association (KAA)“Stop the Bleed” class on Saturday, August 13, at the KAA’s Route 81 headquarters? The course, which begins at noon, is free and open to all persons 12 years and older. According to HK Now, '“Stop the Bleed” is a nationwide awareness campaign. It is designed to empower bystanders with the training to deal with traumatic events and emergency bleeding situations before help arrives. The class typically lasts one to one-and-a-half hours, with participants required to wear protective face masks. All those interested are asked to complete registration forms available on the Killingworth Ambulance Association website." Hope to see you there! (HK Now)
  2. Time to add yet one more deadly disease to our list of things to be on the lookout for. A Connecticut scientist charged with monitoring mosquito-borne diseases says to expect human cases of West Nile virus "any day now." Reportedly there are already cases of West Nile Virus in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. West Nile virus has been detected in Connecticut every year since it was introduced into North America in 1999. So be vigilant and protect yourself by minimizing time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, be sure door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair, wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are more active. Clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin, use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure. To protect infants when outdoors, consider the use of an EPA-approved mosquito repellent and apply according to directions when it is necessary to be outdoors.(Patch)
  3. According to a recent article in the Hartford Courant, "Connecticut officials have begun rolling out a wide-ranging new law aimed at reducing vehicle emissions, including adding 10 more electric vehicles that will now be eligible for the state’s rebate program. The legislation, which increases funding for the initiative, raises the MSRP cap for eligible purchased and leased battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles to $50,000. In turn, state residents who meet certain income requirements can qualify for up to $9,500 in incentives depending on the type of vehicle. (Hartford Courant)
